Look Alive comes full circle with debut EP 'Mistakes & Milestones'

Atlanta punk rockers Look Alive, a 5-piece whose understanding of music is anchored by their appreciation for the guts that it takes to survive, is hitting the road this month in support of their debut EP, Mistakes & Milestones (release date: 07.02.13), and they're kicking things off right here in Charleston with a show at The Mill on Friday, July 12th.

Having more than ten years of experience behind them, filled with countless nights of going hungry and sleeping on strangers' floors or in cars, the members of Look Alive came together for their current line-up last summer, and were quickly signed to Atlanta-based record collective, Autumn + Colour Records. With Mistakes & Milestones, the band is paying homage to just that - all of the mistakes and the milestones made along the road, as well as the friends, family and fans that have all brought them to where they are today.

From the opening shreds of "Anchored", Mistakes & Milestones rips into you with all of the energy one would expect from a hard working, pop-punk band (think Polar Bear Club, or The Wonder Years), but with the melodic aggression of bands like the Deftones, or Muse's earlier stuff. George McMullan (guitar/vox), Cody Wellons (guitar) and Jace Kay (bass) fuse together in perfectly layered lockstep, while the drumming of Patrick Cash propels the songs forward like an intricately timed piece of machinery. Seamlessly moving to and from double-time beats and spitting out machine gun-like snare rolls, Cash's strength behind the drum kit compels the listener to move, whether you roll your head, stomp your feet or shake your fists.

The guitars fit snugly over the drums, a refreshing blend of classically riffy lines thick with thoughtful chord progressions. On tracks like "Sink or Swim" and "The Way I See It", McMullan and Wellons complement one another, producing a full sound with enough distortion to land the heavy punches, but without burying the details of their fancy finger work. Jace Key executes a solid foundation with his bass guitar, throwing a weight behind the band that is often lost in the overarching genre of pop-punk. But one of Look Alive's strongest attributes is perhaps the voice of singer Jacob Causey, who escapes the snotty trappings of other punk frontmen, like Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, with a gritty aggression more on par with the likes of CKY's Devon Miller.

"Just let me take this opportunity / to say the things I need to say to you," are the first words on the record, revealing the open book that is Mistakes & Milestones. Causey's straight-forward, take-no-prisoners approach to lyrics gives the band a smart, identifiable edge above the punk fray. His voice is clear and strong, belting out lines that sway from biting ("So figure it out / and understand it's all or nothin' / I see who you are / you're going nowhere fast") to bittersweet ("This town means everything to me / so I won't go down easily / As you can see it's always the same two things / that's got me runnin' on empty").

But in "Over/Under", the last of the seven tracks, Look Alive comes full circle. "So I packed it all up / I left everything behind / there was only so much I could take / And I remember / that I was getting in the way / spending most of my time wasting space," Causey growls over spatial guitars and pounding drums.

"But these mistakes make milestones / and I'm not giving up, I'm getting out."

You can buy and stream Mistakes & Milestones via the links below, and make sure to come out to The Mill in Park Circle this Friday, July 12th, to catch Look Alive's first Charleston show! Sharing the bill will be Loners Society and el Camino. Music starts around 10p, and shows at The Mill are always FREE!

Rock n Roll Feedback

"What would rock n roll be without feedback?"

When David Gilmour asked this in 1971, he was of course talking about audio feedback, but sometimes a band also needs – and deserves! – a good write-up. Charleston's music community is teeming with talent of all styles, synergy and cadence, creating a patchwork of sound across our old city. Add to this all of the great bands currently pouring out of sister cities such as Atlanta, Asheville, Savannah and Charlotte, and the potential to catch a good show on any given night is pretty fantastic! The landscape of music in the Southeast is changing, and you can be a part of it, if you know where to look.

This blog seeks to promote those who are working hard on crafting their own original music, so the monthly and nightly show schedules that I post may not appear as full as some of the other sites that list every live set (including cover and party bands) going on around town. If I'm ever missing anyone, please don’t hesitate to send me a note so that new shows can get added! Album reviews are also nice feedback for bands, so feel free to pass along info about upcoming releases.

Bookmark 'Rock n Roll Feedback' to get show recaps, album reviews, tour dates and other news about the artists and organizations whose calloused hands and road weary souls are driving the Southeast music community to be an undeniably integral facet of rock n roll's rebirth.

Locked and Loaded - The Royal Tinfoil are returning to the Pour House

Charleston's one and only, The Royal Tinfoil, bring their moonshine-soaked gypsy blues back to the Pour House this Saturday, Nov. 17th, for their first big show since wrapping a successful tour over the summer. The months between the end of that tour and now have been anything but low-key for the band, as most of the members play in other acts around town or have their own side projects, but the Tinfoil is revved up and ready to shake some souls. Armed with a stockpile of new tunes and a bloodied-knuckle fistful of demon-exorcising energy, this is guaranteed to be one hell of a show.

Sharing the bill is Atlanta's own The Whiskey Gentry, love child of Lauren Staley (lead vox + guitar) and Jason Morrow (lead guitar + vox). Sounding like bluegrass that's overdosed on Adderall, this band plays with all the excitement and fury of a good punk show, married with the daring melody and all the finger pickin' goodness of a classic country act. But this isn't your average hipster alt-country outfit - The Whiskey Gentry is good ol' foot stompin', sweat flinging Appalachian rock at its finest, and I'm psyched to welcome them to our town!

Evan Andree's "Invisible Sap" - Indie pop has fallen in love

Emerging Atlanta-based musician Evan Andree has many things to be thankful for this holiday season. With a new album coming out just before Thanksgiving and a track from his previous EP getting some worldwide exposure thanks to Nike UK's "Find Your Greatness" ad campaign, 2012 has indeed been a good year for the singer-songwriter.

"Invisible Sap", the new 3-track EP being released on Nov. 20th exclusively through Brite Revolution, takes a decidedly different turn from Andree's earlier electronic and house dance days. Featuring bright guitars and spirited vocals in the style of Death Cab-meets-Passion Pit, this album gives a nod to youthful exploration and the frightening excitement of realizing your first love.

The opening track, "American Dream", could be the new generation's "Jack and Diane". Backed by a steady beat and concise guitar work, Andree sings, "You were that sweetheart girl / that every boy dreams of growing up / And the way we met was / like an American dream." The chorus adds some sentimentality, while a clubby, bass-driven bridge at the 2-minute mark provides some depth and mood to Andree's new indie pop sound. "Your Song" is thoughtful and romantic, with a lot of little musical details that make it a pleasure to listen to. The last song, "Mr. Teleportation", is the edgiest of the tracks with layers of distorted guitar and a more aggressive beat than previously heard on the album. But Andree's scintillating voice strikes a charming balance with such honest lyrics as, "I've felt this way a hundred times before /  locked in a room alone and on the floor / Singing my heart feels for someone / so far away / I don't want the pain to stop / I just want her here with me."

It is obvious that Evan Andree understands songwriting and all of the hard work that comes along with it, but right now his two most formidable attributes are his enthusiasm and unjaded outlook. These are two very important qualities that often get lost along the way, but if Andree can harness and hold onto them, his talent should take him far.

Autumn + Colour Records - It's All About Community

For years, people have lamented the record label's proclivity for taking advantage of eager and often starry-eyed musicians, owning their record royalties, publishing rights and even their likeness. But like most things in life, few people have done anything to change things - until now.

Allow me to introduce Todd Richard Stevens and Travis Groo, both veterans of the music industry who met through Stevens' Atlanta-based multi-media company, Stage Underground. Groo, a former booking agent, was managing singer/songwriter Austin Archer at the time, whom Stevens wanted to sign to his new label. During the signing process, Stevens approached Groo about forming a partnership and in December of 2011, the two founded Autumn + Colour Records, a grassroots label with an innovative approach to the artist/label relationship.

"We both felt that the relationship between the artist and the record label has always been a business war," Groo says. "We brainstormed for months and decided the fairest way to operate a label is to become equal partners."

Traditionally, the record label's dominant role has been in the development, promotion and subsequent sale of the actual recorded work; the terms of the contract were limited to a certain percentage of the total music sales, or direct album revenue.

But since the turn of the 21st century, the music industry has seen a surge in what is commonly referred to as a "360 deal", or Multiple Rights Deal. When a record label signs a new band under a 360 deal, they provide the financial backing for the development, promotion and sale of the recorded work - along with merchandise, book sales and any and all other means of income otherwise generated by the band. Under the general terms of a typical 360 deal, the record label takes money every time the band makes money, even when it has nothing to do with the direct sale of the studio-recorded work.

"Sure, everything is paid for by the label...but it's all recoupable before the artist sees any money," Groo explains. "Smart artists can get a better rate at their bank, and keep control of their music."

"We just really don't like the industry standard," he continues, "and we feel that an artist will take their career more seriously if they're equally vested."

Operating on a debt-free business model and swiftly approaching their 1-year anniversary, Autumn + Colour Records now has a handful of local bands that steadily tour, not only throughout the southeast but into New England and out West. When asked what criteria Autumn + Colour looks for in a potential band partnership, Groo answers without hesitation.

"The word is passion. We learned so much in a short period of time," he says. "A great sounding album is not enough anymore. An artist must have an undeniable drive for success, which means touring."

Groo and Stevens advise their bands to tour for no less than four months when promoting a new album, to help cement its proper introduction. They also stress the importance of the true, die hard fans and music lovers - not just the network of supportive family and friends.

"When artists put their hard work, blood, sweat and tears into an album, they will work extremely hard to make sure it's successful," says Groo.

In addition to partnering with their bands, Autumn + Colour Records also partners with its local communities. Ten percent from all streams of income are donated to regional charities such as the Center for Independent Living (Orlando, FL) and Soles4Souls (Nashville, TN).

"People have told us this is a terrible time in history to start a new label," Groo says. "We believe it's the very best time. We offer a fair solution in an industry that can't figure out what it's doing."

The Power of Ponderosa

Ponderosa (Atlanta) triumphantly returned to Greenville this weekend, owning the Main Stage at the Fall for Greenville street festival. Their first time back to G-Vegas since their stunning sophomore album, "Pool Party" (New West Records), was released earlier this summer, the band used the opportunity to pound out many of the new tunes, sweeping across the crowd with all of the thick, rolling power that I have come to expect from these guys.

The self-described "neo-psychedelic indie rock band" is unapologetic and unconventional in its style (i.e., a breath of fresh air), kicking aside the tired verse-chorus-verse format for a blended scope of ethereal soundscapes, reverb musings and musical ruminations. As a whole, "Pool Party" is on par with anything that Brian Wilson has ever written (ever) and, for me, no one track exemplifies this more than "Black Hill Smoke". With its rolling, triplet cadence and nostalgic longing, the song reaches its emotional fever pitch as guitarist Kris Sampson dives deeply into a lo fi, reverb-soaked solo, coming up for air a half minute later to rejoin the chorus about a dark haired girl. The harmonies crafted between Kalen Nash (vox + guitar) and Jonathan Hall (vox + bass) melt together in such a way that it becomes impossible to tell where one voice ends and the next begins, providing a distinctly wistful and haunting aura to the record.

"Navajo", the first officially released single from "Pool Party", is more upbeat but no less serious in its innovative mission to compile a variety of textures and layers, reducing Phil Spector's esteemed Wall of Sound to a tinny afterthought.

But don't let all of the expansive and dreamlike tracks on this album fool you. Ponderosa is, at its heart, a rock n roll band, and the strongest tie between "Pool Party" and the band's 2011 debut album "Midnight Revival" - which is nothing short of an Allman Brothers-meets-The Doors roadhouse classic - would have to be the new track "Get A Gun". With a throbbing, hypnotic bass line that evokes images from a Leonard Cohen novel, the song is a heavy, melodic grind, in stark yet complimentary contrast to the hopeful "On Your Time" and the bewitchingly desolate "Cold Hearted Man".

When a Greenville festival goer bellowed out a request for "Devil On My Shoulder" from the 2011 release, Ponderosa quickly obliged and tore into a whiskey-rocking, sweat-inducing rendition of the tune. Complete with guitar shredding and an emphatic thrashing of the drum kit, Ponderosa proved that beautiful music doesn't have to take a back seat to ballsy rock n roll.
